Introduction to mycorrhiza
Mycorrhiza is a mutual association of fungi and roots of higher plants such as the Pinus tree.
Role of fungi in mycorrhiza
Fungi lack chlorophyll and thus, cannot synthesise food by photosynthesis. It derives its nutrition from the roots of higher plants such as the Pinus tree. In turn, fungus helps in absorbing maximum nutrients, water and minerals from the soil.
Additionally, it increases the tolerance of plants to abiotic stress such as drought and salinity.
Moreover, fungus also provides resistance against the microbial infections to the plants.
Role of roots of higher plants in mycorrhiza
Pinus trees have chlorophyll pigment which helps them to prepare food by photosynthesis. It provides food to the fungus living in close association.
