What is the first polar body?

Open in App
Solution

Polar Body:

  1. The division of egg cells is not uniform, resulting cells have the same DNA, but one cell is smaller in size, called a polar body.
  2. So, these are formed by the first meiotic division of the primary oocyte.
  3. When the primary oocyte undergoes division, it produces a small first polar body and a large secondary oocyte.
  4. Polar bodies remove one-half of the diploid chromosome set produced by meiotic division in the egg.
  5. So, the secondary oocyte and first polar body are haploid.
