ATP synthase is an enzyme that synthesises adenosine triphosphate (ATP). It consists of two parts: CF0, which is embedded in the thylakoid membrane and forms a transmembrane channel that carries out facilitated diffusion of protons across the membrane. The other portion is called CF1 that protrudes on the outer surface of the thylakoid membrane on the side that faces the stroma. The breakdown of the gradient provides enough energy to cause a conformational change in the CF1 particle of the ATP synthase. This makes the enzyme synthesize several molecules of energy-packed ATP from ADP.


ATPase is an enzyme that breaks down ATP into ADP and phosphate groups. Hence, its role is in hydrolysis of ATP.

NADP reductase enzyme located on the stroma side of the membrane helps in the formation of NADPH. It reduces NADP to NADPH.
