The root is generally an underground part of the plant.
They are positively geotropic and negatively phototropic.
A root cap, a zone of division, an elongation zone, and a zone of maturation are the four regions of a root.
On the basis of origin the roots can be classified into - Tap root system, fibrous root system, and adventitious root system.
Tap root system - It is made up of the primary roots and their branches. For example - dicots (mustards).
Fibrous root system - The primary root is transient and is typically replaced by a number of small fibrous roots. These roots come from the stem's base. For example - monocots ( wheat).
Adventitious root system -Any part of the plant, besides the radicle, has the ability to create these roots. For example - grasses
The function of root:
Providing a proper anchorage to the plant parts.
Water and dissolved mineral absorption and transmission to the stem.
