Step 1: Determination of root word:

  • In order to define the length of the carbon chain names are, For one carbon atom - Methane (CH4), for two carbon atoms chain- Ethane (CH3CH3), for three carbon atoms chain- Propane, and so on.

Step 2: Determination of functional group:

  • IUPAC’s nomenclature of ethers, According to IUPAC naming, a substituent group containing more carbon atoms is chosen as the parent hydrocarbon. The other substituent group attached to the oxygen atom is named with the prefix “oxy”. Since the ether group is present at the first carbon. Thus “1” is added.

  • The structure of C6H5O(CH2)6CH3 is as follows,

  • Hence, the IUPAC name of C6H5O(CH2)6CH3 is 1-phenoxy heptane.
