Meristem:

  1. The flowering plant has the ability to grow its entire life because it possesses meristematic or embryonic tissue.
  2. Meristems are specialized regions of plant growth and mark the regions where active cell division and rapid division of cells take place.
  3. Meristems are of three types depending on their location: Apical meristem, Intercalary meristem and Lateral meristem.

Apical meristem:

  1. Apical meristem is located at root apex, shoot apex, leaf buds, etc.
  2. It is responsible for increasing the length of the plant and it is called primary growth.
  3. Therefore, the meristem occurring in the tips of the roots is called the apical meristem.
