Question

What is the oxidation number of H in H2O?

Open in App
Solution

Oxidation number

Oxidation number denotes the oxidation state of an element in a compound ascertained according to a set of rules formulated on the basis that electron pair in a covalent bond belongs entirely to a more electronegative element.

Calculating the oxidation number of Hydrogen(H) in H2O:

The oxidation state of Oxygen(O) = -2

Consider the oxidation state of Hydrogen(H) = x

Now,

2(x)-2=0x=+1

Hence, the oxidation number of Hydrogen in H2O is +1, and Oxygen is -2.
