The sarva shiksha abhiyan has played an extremely important role in the universalisation of primary education. Under this scheme, every child has been given the right to have access to school education till the age of 14. The abhiyan has sought to universalize primary education by 2007 and elementary education by 2010. It has sought to bridge gaps between different social groups and gender in the access to education. It has also emphasised the creation of schools which has basic amenities that allow children to remain in school.
