Question

What is the role of transacetylase in lac operon?

Open in App
Solution

Lac Operon:

  1. The lactose operon (also known as the lac operon) is a set of genes that are specific for the uptake and metabolism of lactose and is found in E. coli and other bacteria.
  2. Galactoside acetyltransferase (thiogalactoside transacetylase) are enzymes transferring an acetyl group from acetyl-CoA to galactosides, lactosides, and glucosides.
  3. They are coded for by the lacA gene of the lac operon in E.coli.
  4. The lacA encodes for an enzyme, β-galactoside transacetylase (LacA), which transfers an acetyl group from acetyl-CoA to β-galactosides.
