The prokaryotic cyanobacterium Nostoc is in charge of carrying out photosynthesis.
In freshwater, they frequently live in colonies. They have also been discovered in several other places like as the bottom of lakes, dwelling on rocks and attaching themselves to them.
Structure of nostoc:
Nostoc's body is made up of many filament-like structures that resemble threads.
Numerous spherical cells grouped in a chain-like arrangement make up each filament structure.
The architecture of every cell is comparable. A gelatinous sheath, also known as a polysaccharide and protein-containing sheath, envelops the entire filament.
Water is absorbed and held in by the gelatinous sheath, which serves as a protective layer. Cells are often round, oval, or cylindrical in shape.
These mass colonies can be of different sizes, shapes, and colors.
