Question

What is the temperature coefficient of copper?

Open in App
Solution

Temperature coefficient:

  • It could be defined as the change in the electrical conductivity of any material or substance when a change in temperature is made.
  • It depends on the collision between the electrons within the metals.
  • When one increases the temperature, the collision of electrons becomes faster and more rapid, hence resistance increases with rising in temperature.
  • The relation between temperature and resistance R0andRTis approximately given as
  • RT=R0[1+α(T-T0)];RT=R0[1+α(∆T)],where,R0→resistanceat0°CT→Temperature
  • The temperature coefficient of copper is 0.393%per degree celsius.
  • In other words, if the temperature increases by1°Cthen the resistance increase by0.393%.
