Question

What makes an embryo implant?

Open in App
Solution

Implantation of the embryo:

  1. The embryo is the early stage of development of a foetus that has passed 9 weeks post-fertilization.
  2. Implantation is the process in which a developing embryo adheres to the endometrium and derives nutrients required for its development.
  3. It occurs in three distinct stages. First, the blastocyst comes in contact with the implantation site on the endometrium.
  4. The trophoblast cells of the blastocyst adhere to the endometrial epithelium and they cross the epithelial membrane to invade to endometrial stroma.
  5. The embryo implants during the blastocyst stage and the progesterone stimulates the uterine lining to thicken and facilitate implantation.
  6. The hormones trigger the hatching of the blastocyst in which its outer layer attaches to the topmost endometrial layer.
  7. The blastocyst cells produce L-selection which allows it to bind to the endometrium and give rise to a foetus.
