Question

What would be the number of chromosome in the spermatids?

Open in App
Solution

1: Spermatogenesis
The process by which sperms are produced from spermatogonia is called spermatogenesis. In this process the spermatogonia undergo meiotic division and give rise to primary spermatocytes. Further the first meiotic division of these primary spermatocytes gives rise to secondary spermatocytes and second meiotic division gives rise to circular and haploid cells called spermatids. These spermatids differentiate to form the sperms.

2: Ploidy of spermatids
Since spermatids are formed as a result of meiotic division, it will have half the number of chromosomes as that of the spermatogonium. Spermatogonia are diploid cells that have 46 chromosomes. Therefore the spermatids will have 23 chromosomes.
