Question

What would be the result of mitosis without cytokinesis?

Open in App
Solution

Mitosis:

  1. Mitosis (a cell cycle phase) happens when the DNA in a cell has been duplicated, resulting in two sets of chromosomes in one cell.
  2. These two sets of chromosomes are separated during mitosis, and two identical nuclei are created within the cell.

Result of mitosis without cytokinesis:

  1. Cytokinesis is the final step of mitosis in which the contents of the cell (cytoplasm and nuclei) are separated into two distinct, identical daughter cells.
  2. Mitosis without cytokinesis results in a cell with more than one nucleus but a connected cytoplasm (syncytium).
  3. A multinucleated cell is one with several nuclei.
  4. This might be a normal occurrence. Humans, for example, have multinucleated bone cells (osteoclasts) that originate in this manner.
  5. Certain insects, such as the fruit fly, exhibit mitosis without cytokinesis during their early development (Drosophila).
  6. It can also be an indication of a disrupted cell cycle, which is a pathogenic condition found in malignancies.
