Question

When a bar of iron 50.0 cm long at 15oC is heated in a furnace, it becomes 50.4 cm. If the coefficient of linear expansion of iron is 1.1×105 Co1, find the temperature of furnace.

Solution

Expansion of rod =coefficientofexpansion×L×ΔT
(50.450)×102=1.1×105×.5×(T15)
0.4×102=.55×105(T15)
T=15+0.4×102.55×105=15+727=742oC
