Secondary amines on reaction with Hinsberg’s reagent produce sulphonamides without any hydrogen atom attached to the nitrogen atom. Hence, it is not acidic and therefore insoluble in alkali. The amide produced in this case is N-ethyl-N-methylbenzenesulphonamide. Secondary amine reacts with benzenesulphonyl chloride forming N, N-dialkyl benzenesulphonamide, which is insoluble in alkali.
