Question

Why are 2 ATP used in glycolysis?

Open in App
Solution

Glycolysis:

  1. Glycolysis is a 10-step chain reaction in which glucose gets converted into pyruvates.
  2. It is the first step in cellular respiration.
  3. In the first step, glucose ⇢ glucose-6-phosphate, ATP is used and gets converted into ADP.
  4. Similarly, in the third step, fructose-6-phosphate ⇢ fructose-1,6-biphosphate, ATP is used.
  5. Thus, two ATPs are used in the first three steps of glycolysis.
  6. Hence, to split the glucose 2 molecules of ATPs are used.
