Why are mushrooms considered saprophytic fungi?

Mushrooms:

  1. Mushrooms are advanced members of a fungi group which belong to class Basidiomycetes.
  2. They grow on the dead and decaying matter like dung, old rotten logs which are rich in the organic matter. Therefore, they are saprophytic fungi.
  3. Basidiomycetes – Mushrooms are said to be the most commonly found basidiomycetes and mostly live as parasites. Sexual reproduction occurs via basidiospores.
  4. Asexual reproduction occurs via conidia, budding or fragmentation. For Example- Agaricus.
