Question

Why commutator is used in DC motors ?

Open in App
Solution

DC motor

  1. It is a rotatory electric motor that converts electric energy into mechanical energy.
  2. They take power through direct current and convert it into mechanical rotation.
  3. In the figure, we can see the rotor, stator, axle, commutator, brushes, and field magnets.

Commutator

  1. A Commutator is a rotatory electrical switch that periodically reverses the current between the external circuit and rotor.
  2. It was discovered by Hippolyte Pixii and Willian Ritchie in 1832.

In DC motors, commutators are used to ensure that the current flow through the rotor windings is always in the same direction and the coil on the rotor is energized with respect to the field coils.
