Question

Why does a diamond have a high melting point?

Open in App
Solution

Diamond:

  • Diamond is a solid form of the element carbon.
  • The chemically stable form of carbon at room temperature and pressure is another solid form of carbon known as graphite, but diamond transforms into it very slowly.

Melting Point:

  • Diamond has a giant molecular perfect tetrahedron structure and a three-dimensional solid network of strong covalent bonds.
  • Due to this strong covalent bonding, it requires very high energy to separate the atoms that's why diamond has high melting and boiling point.
