Question

Why is G 0 at equilibrium?

Open in App
Solution

Gibbs free energy:

  1. Gibbs free energy which is also called Gibbs function, Gibbs energy, or free enthalpy, is a term used to estimate the greatest amount of work done in a thermodynamic system while temperature and pressure remain constant.
  2. The sign 'G' stands for Gibbs free energy.

At equilibrium:

  1. The equilibrium given by G=0 is known as the spontaneous equilibrium.
  2. This means that the reaction rate for both the forward and backward reactions will be constant.

Hence, G is 0 at equilibrium.
