Question

Why is Tertiary Alcohol more Reactive?

Open in App
Solution

Tertiary alcohol:

  • A compound where the hydroxyl group -OH is attached to a saturated carbon atom, which is bonded with three other carbon atoms.
  • Tertiary alcohols are more reactive than other alcohols because in the case of tertiary alcohols the reaction proceeds and the formation of 3° the carbocation is seen, which is highly stable.
  • The reaction, in this case, proceeds through the SN1 mechanism.
