Question

Why Li compounds are soluble in organic solvents?

Open in App
Solution

Lithium:

  • Lithium belongs to alkaline metals.
  • It is a silvery metal and floats on water.
  • It is a low-dense and highly reactive element.
  • It is used for lithium-ion batteries and cells.

Li solubility in organic solvents:

  • Organic solvents are carbon-based solvents that can dissolve one or more substances.
  • Lithium compounds are soluble in organic solvents because of their high covalent nature.
  • Their high polarizing power is also the reason.
  • Other alkali compounds are ionic in nature. So, they are easily soluble in water.
  • Lithium compounds are covalent due to Fajan's rule i.e, it is very hard to lose or gain electrons to form an ionic bond as it is the smallest atom.
  • The attraction between the outer electrons and nucleus is greater.
  • So, lithium compounds are soluble in organic solvents like DMC (Dimethyl carbonate), alcohol and ether.
