Question

Write the formula and electron dot structure of carbon tetrachloride.

Open in App
Solution

Carbon tetrachloride:

  • The formula of carbon tetrachloride is CCl4.
  • It is a colorless and odorless substance.
  • It is used as a solvent, a refrigerant, and as a dry cleansing agent.

Electron dot structure:

  • The electron dot structure is also called as Lewis dot structure.
  • It is a structural determination of a molecule where dots are used for determination.
  • Each dot represents electrons.
  • The valence electrons of the elements are taken into account for drawing the structure.
  • It can be used to show the bonding between the atoms in a molecule and the lone pair of electrons present in it.:

  • The valency of carbon is four.
  • The central atom is carbon which is written along with its valence electrons.
  • Then the four chlorine atoms with seven valence electrons satisfy the valency of carbon to form carbon tetrachloride.
  • There are four covalent bonds present between carbon and chlorine.
