Let us first convert the given Roman numerals into Hindu-Arabic numerals.

XXXIV = 10 + 10 + 10 + 5 - 1 = 34
XVI = 10 + 5 + 1 = 16
XL = 50 - 10 = 40

Now, XXXIV - XVI + XL = 34 - 16 + 40 = 58.
But, 58 = 50 + 8 = L + VIII = LVIII.

Thus, XXXIV - XVI + XL = LVIII.
