You are given a mixture of iodine in alcohol called tincture iodine. Which method will you use to recover both, iodine as well as alcohol, from this mixture ?
(a) evaporation (b) simple distillation (c) fractional distillation (d) crystallisation
(b) simple distillation
This method is used to separate the mixture of two miscible liquids where the difference between their boiling points is at least 25 ºC.
For example, Acetone and water are miscible liquids also the difference between their boiling point is more than 25 ºC so they can be separated by the method of simple distillation. Follow the steps given below
(i) Take a mixture in the distillation flask fit it with the thermometer.
(ii) Arrange the apparatus as shown in the given figure.
(iii) Heat the mixture slowly keeping a close watch on a thermometer.
(iv) Since the acetone has a lower boiling point starts vaporises and condense in the condenser which is finally collected in the beaker.
Similarly, To recover both the components (iodine and alcohol) from the tincture of iodine, the distillation process is used because the difference between the boiling points of both components is more than 25 ∘C.
