Question

To the captain of ship A, which is traveling with a velocity of (3i + 4j)km/hr, a second ship B appears to have a velocity of (5i + 12j) km/hr. What is the true velocity of ship B?

Solution

Step 1:Given:

VA=3i+4j

VBA=5i+12j

Step 2:Calculate the true velocity of the ship B:

Both are moving in the same direction So the relative vector would be the difference between them.

VBA=VB-VA5i+12j=VB-3i+4jVB=2i+8j

Hence true velocity is 2i+8j.
