Babur was the builder of the Mughal Empire, and Mughal ruler Humayun’s father. Mughals belonged to a branch of the Turks called Chagatai, identified after the famous Mongol Leader, the second son of Genghis Khan. Babur, who was a Chagatai Turk, had laid the foundations of the Mughal Empire in India.

Information about Babur

  • Babur is the creator of the Indian Mughal Empire.
  • On his father’s side, he was a descendant of Timur and on his mother’s side Genghis Khan.
  • Its name was initially Zahiruddin Muhammad.
  • At the age of 11 in 1494 Babur became Farghana’s ruler succeeding his father, Umar Shaikh Mirza.
  • Daulat Khan, Punjab’s most powerful nobleman, unwillingly with Ibrahim Lodhi, invited Babur to invade India.
  • He conducted four expeditions to India in the years 1519 to 1523 to conquer it.

Military Conquest of Babur

  • Babur had captured Kabul in 1504.
  • Babur captured Lahore in 1524 but was forced to withdraw to Kabul after Daulat Khan turned against him.
  • Babur invaded and recaptured Punjab in November 1525.
  • Babur defeated Ibrahim Lodi in the First Battle of Panipat on 21 April 1526 and soon captured Delhi. Despite vast and superior troops, Ibrahim Lodi lost in war because of Babur’s excellent strategic plan and artillery use.
  • Panipat’s First Battle marked the beginning of Mughal supremacy in India.
  • Babur captured Delhi and sent Humayun his son to take Agra.
  • Babur declared himself as Emperor of Hindustan.
