On the occasion of Teacher’s Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that 14,500 schools will be upgraded under the new PM-SHRI (PM Schools for Rising India) scheme.
PM-SHRI (PM Schools for Rising India): On Monday, September 5, 2022, Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that a total of 14,500 schools located across the country will be reformed under the PM-SHRI (PM Schools for Rising India). A step has been taken to show all the elements of the National Education Policy–2020.
The first announcement regarding this new "yojana" was made by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in June, during a conference which was conducted in Gujarat. At that conference, ministers from all the states and Union Territories were present.
After the announcement, the Prime Minister interacted with the teachers who were honoured with the National Awards. He said that schools will showcase all the essential features of the National Education Policy-2020.
Schools which come under the Centre, states, UTs and local government bodies have been included in the scheme. These schools will act as an example and also offer mentorship to schools that are located near them.
PM-SHRI mainly aims at focusing on the learning that has been done by students in a particular grade rather than focusing on the outcome that has been represented in the exams. Students' conceptual understanding and application of knowledge in real-life experiences will be assessed. It will be competency-based.
During his interaction with the teachers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked about the monumental role that teachers play in the implementation of the NEP-2020. It should be based on the lives of the students.
The curriculum and teaching style will be divided into four stages:
- Foundational (pre-school and grades I and II)
- Preparatory (III-V)
- Middle (VI-VIII)
- Secondary (IX-XII)
During the foundational years, play-based learning methods will be used, whereas at the preparatory level, the government is planning to introduce light textbooks along with formal teaching methods. Subject teachers will be introduced in the middle level and during the secondary stage (IX-XII), the teaching will be multidisciplinary in nature. There won’t be any hard separation between the streams (arts and sciences or commerce).
