Directorate of School Education, AP takes steps to make schools safe

The norms prescribed in the POCSO act are being implemented by the AP Government in schools for making schools safe. DIRECTORATE OF SCHOOL EDUCATION The Directorate of School Education, Andhra Pradesh, has taken certain initiatives for making schools a safe place. The initiatives include tracking sexual harassment and bullying, design of certain standard operating procedures for the safety of students, especially girl students, and training on child protection norms prescribed in the POCSO act. The education commissioner, S Suresh Kumar has highlighted the inability to report abuse by the students, being the primary cause of the increase in abuse among students in schools. Creating awareness among students regarding abuse will play a key role in tracking and curbing harassment or abuse in schools. From now on each school will have a school safety committee, a school complaints committee, and a child abuse monitoring committee, which will be headed by the principal of the respective schools. These committees will consist of people who have practical experience in dealing with child rights issues. Each school will comprise of complaint box where students can lodge their complaints regarding abuses, bullying, or harassment. In case, the complaint is against the teacher or any other staff members, the immediate inquiry will be conducted by keeping the student’s identity confidential. Along with all this, child helpline numbers will be available in every school. The complaints made by the students will be scrutinized by the local Tehsildar and other Government officials. They will recommend actions to be taken within 15 days time period to the corresponding competent authority. From now on meetings will take place regularly between the school safety committee members and teachers to discuss the current issues and will both jointly work on actions needed to be taken to tackle the issues.
