Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore students, Arjun and Krishnan to bag the James Dyson Award (national category) for innovating “Epishot” which is basically an autoinjector to cure anaphylaxis.
IISc Bangalore: Two students, Arjun and Krishnan, from the Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore, are to be awarded the James Dyson Award for the year 2022 for inventing “EpiSHOT.” Both the James Dyson Award (national category) and the winner will get a cash prize worth approximately Rs 4.6 lakh and a chance to represent India in the international round for the final round. The final winners will be picked by Sir James Dyson.
An EpiSHOT is basically an autoinjector that, single-handedly, delivers emergency medicine intramuscularly or subcutaneously to cure anaphylaxis (allergic reaction), which can lead to life-threatening situations. The Epishot comes with the provision for sterilisation and reloading, which can be done within two minutes after the first use.
The list of shortlisted candidates will be announced on October 12, 2022, whereas the names of international winners will be announced on November 16, 2022. The duo plans to modify their innovation, Epishot, further for commercial use. The decision has been taken to enhance the manufacturability, reliability, and portability of the product while reducing the cost of the device.
Through this competition, the IISC nominees want to cross the hurdle of getting their product recognised. Thermal floater and Kudarat bioleather have won the second and third prizes, respectively.
The James Dyson Foundation conducts the James Dyson Award with the aim of encouraging aspiring engineering students to discover new ways and apply their knowledge and experience of technology to make people’s lives better.
