  • The Consumer Protection Act is significant for all goods and services.
  • The Consumer Protection Act of 2019, passed by Lok Sabha on 8 July 2019 replaced the Consumer Protection Act of 1986.
  • It was enacted to deal with matters relating to:
  • Prevention of the violation of consumer’s rights

    Prevention of unfair trade practices

    Prevention of misleading advertisements

    • There are 6 rights under the Consumer Protection Act of 2019. They are:
    1. The right of consumers to be protected from goods and services that are detrimental to life and property.
    2. The right of consumers to be protected against unfair trade practices by being aware of the quantity, quality, potency, purity, standard, and price of goods, products, and services.
    3. The right of consumers to have access to a variety of goods, services, and products at competitive prices.
    4. The right to seek redressal at respective forums against unfair and restrictive trade practices.
    5. The right to adequate compensation or consideration from respective consumer forums in case they have been wronged by the seller.
    6. The right to receive consumer education.
