Vasco da Gama made his way to India by rounding the Cape of Good Hope in the southern tip of Africa and reaching the Malabar coast of Kerala on 20 May 1498.
He was the first European to reach India and it is speculated that he was assisted in this endeavour by Kanji Malam, a sailor from Gujarat. Vasco da Gama’s expedition to India laid the foundation of Portuguese expansion in India and ultimately that of European colonialism in the Indian Subcontinent.
