Phytoplankton are microscopic organisms that inhabit both fresh and salty water. Like terrestrial plants, phytoplankton is capable of absorbing sunlight and producing oxygen.

Phytoplankton is an essential part of the aquatic ecosystem. They generate about half the atmosphere’s oxygen, as much per year as all land plants.
