What is the red tide caused by?

Red tides are caused by algae, tiny microorganisms that grow in the water. Almost all bodies of water have algae. A red tide is caused by the excess amount of algae in the water.

It is common in red tides for harmful algal blooms occurring along coastal regions, which result from large concentrations of aquatic microorganisms.
