- According to the Paper Currency Act of 1861, the Government of India received the right to print and circulate notes.
- The first note introduced by the RBI in 1996 was of the Mahatma Gandhi series (10 Rupee Note).
- The notes and coins printed in India are known as fiat money as they are backed by the Government of India.
- Under section 22 of the RBI act, the Reserve Bank has the sole right to issue banknotes in India.
- The banknotes of the denomination 10,20,50,100,200,500 and 2000 are in circulation.
- Bank notes are printed at four currency presses in India, two of which are under the Reserve Bank and two of them by the Government of India.
