Biomagnification is the increase in the buildup of toxins within substances that happens at each stage of the food chain.

Biomagnification is caused by the following factors:

  • When a substance cannot be broken down by environmental processes
  • Substances concentration increases progressively as it moves up the food chain
  • Low or non-existent rate of internal degradation or excretion of the toxic substance
