The Bhil revolt of 1818, one of the first uprisings undertaken by a tribal group in the country. The reason for the uprising was the brutal treatment of the Bhils at the hands of the East India Company who denied them their traditional forest rights and exploited them.
The British responded by sending a force to suppress the rebellion and they did. But it was not in vain, as the British gave concessions to various taxes and returned forest rights as part of the peace settlement.
Even though the British could claim to have suppressed the uprising yet they were never able to achieve permanent peace in the areas inhabited by the Bhils.
