The GIr National Park is located in the state of Gujarat. The initial sanctuary was established by the Nawab of Junagadh who fenced off his hunting grounds in order to protect the declining population of Asiatic Lions.
Gir National Park is the only location in Asia which provides safe haven for the Asiatic Lions. The Asiatic Lions were once spread throughout the continent but a combination of hunting and habitat destruction drastically reduced their numbers.
