Dr. M S Swaminathan is the “Father of the Green Revolution in India”.
An agricultural scientist and agronomist, he has been considered the main architect of the green revolution in India.
He had a crucial role in developing the high-yielding varieties of wheat and rice, which were insect resistant and produced high-quality crops.
His collaborative efforts with Norman Borlaug had made a significant impact on evading famine-like conditions in India.
The World Food Prize, also known as the Nobel Prize for Food and Agriculture, was awarded for the first time in 1987 to M S Swaminathan. The United Nations Environment Programme has addressed him as the “Father of Economic Ecology”.
