Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan are two important states in India having land degradation due to overgrazing.
Land exposed to overgrazing for a long period can result in loss of productivity, usefulness, and biodiversity.
It is necessary to give sufficient time for the land to recover after uninterrupted grazing. This is the result of activity by both native and non-native animals.
The lumbering of animals increases the soil compaction and decreases the permeability of the soil. This increases the runoff and eventually results in soil erosion.
In states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Karnataka, more than 70 % of the land is used for grazing. Most herding societies depend on the land.
