Kolleru Lake is a lagoon lake. When the lake is formed by spits and bars in coastal areas, it is called a lagoon.
A lagoon is a shallow body of water separated from a larger body of water by a narrow landform, such as reefs, barrier islands
The Kolleru lake was declared as a wildlife sanctuary in November 1999 under India’s Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.
