Bharatnet provides broadband connectivity to gram panchayats.
Also known as Bharat Broadband Network Limited, it aims to provide connectivity to 2.5 lakh Gram Panchayats (GP) through optical fibre.
Implemented by the Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL), it was initially launched as the National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN).In 2015, it was renamed Bharat – Net.
Operated under the Ministry of Communications, it is the world’s largest broadband connectivity programme for rural areas.
Broadband connectivity with a speed of 2 Mbps to 20 Mbps at affordable rates is assured in rural areas.
Rural India, with the least accessibility to Internet services, can receive the facilities of e-governance, e-health, e-education, e-banking, etc.
Covering around 6,25,000 villages inthe country, it caters to the higher goal of Digital India. It is built under the Make in India initiative of the government with no foreign investments.
