The Tehri dam in Uttarakhand is the highest in India.
The Tehri Dam project was initiated by the Central government in 1969.
A multipurpose dam on the Bhagirathi river, it caters to diverse needs like electricity generation, supply of drinking water, and supports irrigation. It supplies drinking water to the people of Delhi, Uttarakhand,Uttar Pradesh, and generates 1000 Megawatts of hydroelectricity.
It is an Earth and Rockfill dam with a height of 260.5 meters. It is ranked the 10th tallest dam in the world and the biggest hydroelectric power plant in India.
Built-in 2006, it is operated by THDC (Tehri Development Corporation) India Limited.
The features of the Tehri dam include: chute spillways, a gross storage capacity of 3540 MCM, and an underground powerhouse with four generator sets.
There are concerns about the environmental consequences and geological stability of the Tehri dam. Many people, including environmental activist Sunderlal Bahuguna, led protests against displacing inhabitants.
The largest dam in India is the Hirakud Dam and the oldest one is Kallanai Dam in Tamil Nadu.
