The ozone layer is located in which layer of the Earth’s atmosphere?
The ozone layer is located in the stratosphere, extending from 10-18 kms to 50 kms above the Earth’s surface.
The ozone layer protects the Earth’s surface from the harmful radiation of wavelengths less than 290 nm.
It protects people from harmful UV radiations that can cause skin cancers and problems to the immune system.
Ozone-depleting substances including chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs),hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), and carbon tetrachloride are responsible for the depletion of the ozone layer.
The Montreal Protocol was signed in 1987 by 180 countries to address the problem posed by Ozone depleting substances. It has the credit of being the only UN treaty ratified by all countries of the world.
September 16 is observed as World Ozone day.
Stratosphere
- It is the second layer from the bottom of the atmosphere between the troposphere and mesosphere.
- In the stratosphere, there is an increase in temperature with altitude as a result of the absorption of UV rays by the Ozone layer.
