- The first stage of forest succession is the grass, or plant stage.
- It occurs after land has been cleared due to natural events or otherwise.
- The sudden clearing of the land floods the ground with sunlight.
- Due to which very shade-intolerant pioneer species like long-leaf pine, aspen, or cottonwood begin to compete with grasses.
- At this stage, these trees are mere seedlings in their life, but pioneer species are typically fast growers.
