Indian Institutes did not participate in the Human Genome Project (HGP). However, in January 2020, the Genome India Project was started by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT). Overall 20 Indian institutes are part of this project, including, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, and some of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT’s).
