Charles John Canning became the first viceroy of India in 1858. He became the viceroy after the transfer of power from the East India Company to the Crown of Queen Victoria in 1858 after the revolt of 1857 was crushed.
He is known for taking many administrative decisions even when the rebellion was at full swing. Some of them included making the draft for the Indian Penal Code and the introducing the Hindu Widows’ Remarriage Act, 1856
