The border between India and Pakistan was drawn by Sir Cyril Radcliffe. was a British lawyer and Law Lord. Never having been to India most of his life, he was tasked with drawing up a border between two newly independent nations on both sides in such a way that would leave as many Hindus and Sikhs in India and Muslims in Pakistan as possible.
He had only five weeks to finish this job and the new borders of India and Pakistan were drawn up in that time period. The border drawn up by him caused untold chaos as many people found themselves on the ‘wrong side’ of the border. Seeing the mayhem he had caused, he refused the salary for his work.
