National Sports day is celebrated on 29th August every year.
It is celebrated in memory of the hockey legend, Major Dhyanchand.
Celebrated for the first time in 2012, the platform has been used by the Government to launch different schemes like Khelo India in 2018. Seminars and events are organized on the particular day to highlight the importance of physical activities and sports.
A renowned hockey player of India, Dhyanchand was a part of the Olympic Hockey team that won gold medals in the 1928, 1932, and 1936 Olympic Games.
The highest sporting honour of the country, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna was renamed Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna in 2021.
National Sports Day 2022 marked the 117th birth anniversary of Dhyan Chand.

International Sports Day is celebrated on April 6.
